The paper "What Influences Black British Swimmers to Compete in the East Midlands Region" is a wonderful example of a research proposal on sports and recreation.Out of reviewing many different articles, only 5 articles have been chosen for review. The five articles are electronically published and available online. One finding is an interview. One finding is a guide. Two are articles. Keywords used in the findings were, “What influences black British swimmers too compete in East Midland Regions”.

There were many different articles to choose from that fit the qualification of used keywords. FINDINGS A swimming meet in the East Midland region is a popular sporting event. The event consists of adults from various types of ages. The adults come from all different types of backgrounds. In 1988 Anthony Nesty won an Olympic title for swimming. Since winning the title, there have been nearly 17 different African American swimmers. (Shanks2005) The cause for the increase in African American swimmers has been scientifically investigated.

Studies also have shown that black participants have a better body set up to swim longer distances at faster rates. The slender figures of the black culture allow for better movement in the water. Many other body parts like the hips make it easier to maneuver in the water. Government officials in England have boosted efforts to try and encourage programs that encourage swimming opportunities. Encouraging swimming opportunities means growth for the sport. Programs are put in place to increase adult swimmers.

Swimming is popular in England. About 13.8% of adults attend some sort of swimming. (SIRC2007) The participants engaging in swimming activities are proof that there is a demand for swimming. Culture contributes to who is influenced to participate in sports such as swimming. Having a role model or figure that has succeeded in a sport will encourage others of the same culture to actively want to participate in the sport. Allowing those in certain cultures the access to swimming pools increases swimming influences.

Statistics show that 6% of adult African Americans are participants for swimming. African American women participate in 7% more swimming activities than African American men. Participants are limited to swimming facilities and transportation to swimming facilities. Findings also indicate that areas of low-income levels benefit the most from access to swimming facilities. African American swimmers are greatly influenced by social and media influences. Many adult athletes are stereotyped male African Americans.

(Media, Culture and Society 2010) The influence that African American athletes have on the Black culture is large. These numbers show that role models in the African American culture are mainly athletes. Many young black children look up to those who share the same cultural background. STATISTICS Statistics help show the information of actual findings related to black swimmers in the East Midland Regions. The findings help further interpret the influence that Black British swimmers have compared to other races of individuals.

CONCLUSION Media is a big influence on Black British swimmers. Access to swimming facilities is important in influencing Black British Swimmers. The amount of Black swimmers has risen since 1988 after an African American won an Olympic gold medal for swimming. Studies show that the bodies of African Americans are better built for sports especially swimming.
