Culture contributes to who is influenced to participate in sports such as swimming. Having a role model or figure that has succeeded in a sport will encourage others of the same culture to actively want to participate in the sport. Allowing those in certain cultures the access to swimming pools increases swimming influences.

Statistics show that 6% of adult African Americans are participants for swimming. African American women participate in 7% more swimming activities than African American men. Participants are limited to swimming facilities and transportation to swimming facilities. Findings also indicate that areas of low-income levels benefit the most from access to swimming facilities. African American swimmers are greatly influenced by social and media influences. Many adult athletes are stereotyped male African Americans.
